SEA TURTLE

RIVIERA MAYA – TULUM SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Xel-Há is one of the of Flora, Fauna and Culture of Mexico A.C. camps for the Sea Turtle Conservation Program in the Riviera Maya – Tulum.

The program has worked for 37 years in environmental education, conservation, protection and research of sea turtles. Xel-Há is considered a very important beach for the nesting of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta).

From 1996 to June 2019, Xel-Há has protected 3,270 loggerhead turtles nests and 8,545 white turtles nests, resulting in a total of 11,815 nests. Having 253,778 loggerhead turtles and 693,942 white turtles, a total of 947,720 sea turtle hatchlings have been released on this beach. Along the 13 beaches, the program has protected 187,827 nests and released 13,567,193 sea turtle hatchlings.
